The band Katalena (since 2001) is one of the most excellent Slovenian musical artists, a phenomenon on the Slovene popular music scene. Encompassing Slovene folklore music with modern vibes of rock, jazz and ethno, the band has revived the local traditional musical heritage and enriched it with a fresh energy, making the music sound new and colourful. I’m glad that I finally attended Katalena’s concert, the high quality performance took place in Cvetličarna, Ljubljana (free entrance :P) and lasted 2 hours. Katalena’s songs on myspace.

S.A.R.S. – Sveže Amputirana Ruka Satrijanija (Satriani’s Arm Recently Severed) is a Serbian alternative rock band from Belgrade. Presenting a combination of pop rock, reggae, blues, jazz and hip hop with the ethnic music of Serbia, the band is one of the leading acts of the so-called New Serbian Scene. (wiki)

That was my first disappointment with the life performance of the band. I used to like a few of their song before I came to Slovenia. It’s hard to say why I didn’t like the concert, maybe I just didn’t like a lame festival “Teden Mladih” in Kranj. :-/

Kultur Shock

Kultur Shock combines Balkan folk music with punk, metal and art rock. Its members hail from Bosnia, Bulgaria, and the United States. The band plays in the USA and Europe.

Thanks to Petra Čičič I found out that this band is playing in Metelkova. Dasha, Anton (my Ukrainian friends), Erhan and me went to see them. The performance was cool, but honestly I preferred only their slow (more or less) songs. The music of this band is a bit heavy for me but Balkan sounds are great.

Girls of this band are very cool, so cool that they even don’t shave their armpits. So I had a little kultur shock indeed. ;)

Zabranjeno pušenje

Zabranjeno Pušenje (Serbo-Croatian for No Smoking) is a Yugoslav rock band from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Emir Kusturica used to play bass guitar in Zabranjeno Pušenje in 80es.

I saw this band in a great concert hall Kinošiška in Ljubljana. People of different ages came to listen to Zabranjeno Pušenje, most of them knew lyrics by heart.

The most I liked the song “Mozes Imat Moje Tijelo”. English translation.

The sexiest girl in Slovenia

Well, usually I don’t notice girls but when I saw this girl, the lead singer of Melodrom, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She moves fascinating.

The style of the band, music they play and She – Melodrom has everything to be recognized as the coolest band in Slovenia.

Čompe in Ostriga

It was extremely cool to see this Slovenian band alive! After the concert I’ve got an autograph and after saying “I enjoyed your performance” I’ve even got a kiss :)

The word Čompe means “potatoes” in a dialect of the Northwestern valley of Trenta. The group’s busking music probes street language as well as Slovene modern poetry, and reflects irony as well as joie de vivre, music virtuosity, and dilettantism with zeal and humor. [culture.si]
